Emily graduated from the University of California at Santa Cruz with a B.A. in Psychology. She was a member of the swim team at the University as well as a coach for the Boys & Girls Swim Team at Santa Cruz High School. She worked as a swim instructor, Wilderness Leader, and Lifeguard for five years for the University of California. During numerous summers she was a whitewater raft guide for the most acclaimed company in California, Whitewater Voyages. She is one of few women class five guides. After college, Emily followed her passion to be outdoors and headed to be a Ski Patroller for one of the five leading avalanche forecasting ski areas, Stevens Pass, Washington, where she became a licensed Avalanche Blaster and an avid skier. Emily has spent the past nine summers with Eli Howard, leading summer camps and lessons. She is a Wilderness E.M.T., lifeguard, and when not pursuing her mountain & river passions she is a great asset to the school.  Greg Kessler
Greg has been a Head Instructor at Eli Howard for 11 years. His teaching style is proven to be extremely successful and is a model for all Eli Howard instructors. Greg spends much of his time roaming the Sierras flyfishing for trout with his wife. Raised in Encinitas but well traveled including working his way up to a Class V River Guide and representing the USA in Africa racing down the Zambezi River. Greg loves collecting vinyl records, surfing, and hiking to fly fish- pretty simple really. If you roll up to your lesson or camp and Greg is there, consider yourself lucky because he’s one of the best!  Employment

Eli Howard Surf School is always looking for energetic, considerate, and professional employees. We look for individuals with great personalities, endearing people skills, as well as strong ocean and surfing experience. Our lessons operate year-round with the summer months of June through September being the busiest. When hired by Eli Howard an individual will be invited to train for a trial period. This time allows them to learn our teaching styles, the company philosophies, and to get acquainted with our other surf instructors and staff. If the training process goes well they may be offered a position in our surf school. Current First Aid and CPR is required. Lifeguard Training, EMT, and Water Safety Instructor certifications are a plus.
