Overnight Surf Camps, weekend getaways and group and private lessons are held at San Elijo State Beach in Cardiff by the Sea, just south of Encinitas, California. Our overnight camp is nestled on the bluffs above some of California's most famous surf breaks: Swami's and Cardiff Reef. In this prime beach location, we have easy access to hiking trails, coastal lagoon preserves, tidepools, and we are just steps away from miles of beautiful beach and coastline.
Exit the 5 Freeway at Birmingham Drive and head West towards the beach. Turn LEFT on San Elijo Ave. Turn RIGHT on Chesterfield Drive and cross over the railroad tracks. Turn RIGHT on Coast Highway 101. Free street parking is available along the highway, just past the park entrance. The San Elijo Day-Use parking area entrance is about 200 yards north of the main park entrance, on the west side of the highway. ($8 self pay). If you are dropping off a student for a camp or lesson, go past the main entrance about 200 yards where there is a left turn lane for turning into Day Use Parking. Make a U-Turn and head back to the main campground entrance. Turn right into the campground. You are allowed 10 minutes free parking to drop off your student. Eli Howard Surf School is located just inside the San Elijo campground entrance, on the left.
Group Classes are held 7 days per week at 3 different times, 8am-10am, 10am-12pm, and 12pm-2pm. If you would like to sign up for any of these classes, please call 760-809-3069. Private and Semi-Private lessons are by arrangement. Camps at San Elijo normally begin Mondays at 8:00 a.m.. Weekend Getaways begin Saturdays at 8:00 a.m.. See the Surf Camps page for dates.
